SodaStream is Bubbling PDF Print E-mail

sodastream multi colores

Many “old timers” remember when seltzer was delivered right to their doors; the good old days when the seltzer guy rang the bell and exchanged empty bottles for re-filled new ones. This scenario played out in most large cities around the country and even in the deep south. We Atlantans had a seltzer man too! But, of course he had migrated to Atlanta from New York City.

Well, you can once again have the convenience of carbonated drinks at home, easily and economically with the simple-to-use home soda system from SodaStream.  The SodaStream system carbonates fresh water in reusable, BPA -free plastic bottles, without the use of batteries or electricity. The delicious syrups have no corn syrup, and the diet versions are aspartame free.

Soda-Club is the world's largest manufacturer, distributor and marketer of Home Carbonation Systems. The brands, Soda-Club and SodaStream, are sold in more than 30 countries worldwide. Every year SodaStream provides 600 million liters of carbonated beverage to more than 8 million households, making it one of the largest beverage companies in the world. The company mission: “We aim to revolutionize the beverage industry by providing a convenient, cost-saving, and environmentally-friendly solution for families to prepare their own carbonated beverages at home”.

And it’s easy…
Simply fill a bottle with chilled tap water, secure the bottle onto the machine, press the carbonation button and you’re all done. Add one of the 30 soda mix flavors (OU kosher certified) and gently shake. And yes, soda lovers, they taste authentic and delicious! The average cost is about .25 per 12-ounce serving. And, if you are simply a seltzer fan, or should we say sparkling water aficionado, the cost is about .25 per liter, and you can control the amount of carbonation!

We tested the Genesis model, which is available in red, white or black and has a modern slim-line design. It comes with 2 plastic soda bottles, along with a customized carbonation cylinder. The bottles are dated and eventually do require replacement. Hand washing is suggested since they are not dishwasher safe.

As of “press time” we have tried:

  • Diet Root Beer – only 1 calorie per glass; now that’s a value! It does not contain aspartame, but uses sucralose (Splenda brand).
  • Cranberry-Raspberry was very good (35 calories) – tart and refreshing.
  • Ginger Ale --Loved it! (35 calories)
  • We also sampled flavored carbonated water with MyWater flavor essence. We tasted the berry flavor and it was subtle, only takes a drop or two, and can be adjusted for taste.

Each 16.9 fluid ounce soda drink mix makes about 50 servings.

So, to sum it up, we love SodaStream! Tastes delicious; good for the earth; so easy to make...and a value! Yes, we are bubbling with enthusiasm!

By the way, as an added bonus, please note that making plain seltzer in the SodaSteam is Kosher for Passover!  Of course a new, fresh bottle would be required. And, another bonus; in the opinion of many rabbinical authorities, the SodaStream system may be used on Shabbos. But, just to be sure, consult with your Rabbi.

The company has recently introduced an updated deluxe model, The Penguin, with dishwasher safe glass carafes and some additional features.
